Alex Hawthorn
Alex Hawthorn, born in 1986 in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a non-binary interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the natural world and the human experience of time, often focusing on posthuman ambient soundscapes. Hawthorn holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Their research often delves into geological timescales and the shifting tectonics of Los Angeles. Hawthorn's theatrical sound design has received an Obie Award and LA Ovation Awards, with their work presented globally at various sound art festivals and featured in publications such as Live Design Magazine. They have served as a guest lecturer at Yale School of Drama and Emerson College, and are currently adjunct faculty at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and special faculty at the California Institute of the Arts. Hawthorn divides their time between Berlin, New York, and Los Angeles.
